DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR JUNE 14, 2018

6/14/2018 Ps 49:6-12 Those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches? No man can redeem the life of another or give to Elohim a ransom for him — the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough — that he should live on forever and not see decay. For all can see that wise men die; the foolish and the senseless alike perish and leave their wealth to others. Their tombs will remain their houses forever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves. But man, despite his riches, does not endure; he is like the beasts that perish.

Wealth and the acquisition of material possessions is the way of life for many in the world today. There is nothing wrong with riches or with having extensive material belongings. However, the rich often fall prey to placing their trust in their possessions and often in the possessions of others. Wealth rules their lives. Yahweh wants to bless each one with the things he or she needs for life and more. He did so for Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He did so for David and Solomon. All of these men managed their wealth and maintained humility except for Solomon. It is somewhat easier to become wealthy today. In fact, most people in the West would be considered rich by people living in other nations. How do you manage your possessions? Where is your trust? Regardless of your income, regardless of your individual possessions, regardless of your personal station in life, is your trust first and foremost in Yahweh? We shall all die and as the saying goes, “you cannot take it with you”. Perform well on your job. Take advantage of investment opportunities and make wise decisions about your finances. But remember to place Yahweh first in your life. This will ensure that acquiring physical possessions does not lead to the loss of your life—the one that shall endure forever.
