Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for Elohim’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says Yahweh. On the contrary:
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:19-21
We find in these verses two things aren’t easy to do. The first is, to not take vengeance, to not get even with someone. Notice that vengeance belongs to Yahweh, and by taking vengeance on someone we are in essence stealing from Yahweh. We also notice that we are to feed and give drink to our enemy. These words convey more than just to feed and drink. To feed in the Greek is psomize auton, which means to feed in small portions, like we feed a child or a sick person, with much tenderness, thereby showing our love to him. Potize auton are the Greek words for to give drink and they mean to drink to him, which conveys the thought of pronouncing a blessing on him. The Hebrew La Chaim is a toast to those with whom you drink and it means to life. By doing these two small acts of love to our enemy we will heap coals of fire upon his head. The coals are the result of our love to him and he will be so overcome by your act of kindness that he will repent of the harm he has done to you in the past and will then become your friend. By showing acts of love to our enemies we make peace with him. When a man’s ways please Yahweh he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. Prov.16:7
