Shabbat Shalom
When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of tambourines! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter. When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, “Oh! My daughter! You have made me miserable and wretched, because I have made a vow to Yahweh that I cannot break.” Jud 11:34-35
What a sense of commitment to Yahweh Jephthah displayed! He had made a promise to Yahweh a vow to offer to Him whatever first came to him when he returned from home from defeating the Amorites. He expected to see a goat, or lamb, or calf when he arrived. He did not consider that his daughter would be excited for her father to return home safely, as any loving child would. His promise may be considered rash and without taking into account all possibilities.
However, he did not revoke his promise. He made no effort to change the vow he had made. Most people would have tried to reason with Yahweh, asking Him to allow a retraction or change.
How do you handle the vows and promises you make to Yahweh? Are you rash in making them? Do you follow through regardless of any inconvenience to you personally?
Jephthah fulfilled his word to Yahweh even though it meant the end of his lineage. Will you fulfill your word to Yahweh in all matters regardless of any cost you had not originally considered? Remember your vows to Yahweh and stay true to Him by fulfilling them.
