Daily Devotional for May 01, 2022
Today is day 15 in the count to Pentecost!
But holiness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 1 Tim 6:6-8
Living right and being fully and completely devoted to the will of Yahweh should be enough for us. However, we tend to allow ourselves to be influenced by the attractions of this life. We become too involved in our work, or personal activities and hobbies, or we devote too much time and energy to acquiring things.
It is difficult to be content with merely having our needs for food, shelter and clothing met. Yet, on the most basic levels of human existence, food, shelter and clothing are all that is needed to sustain life. Everything else in the world profits us nothing. Expensive and fancy cars, large homes, large bank accounts, big screen televisions, etc. do nothing to help us reach the ultimate goal of salvation. There is nothing wrong with having any of these things and they can bring a type of pleasure but they can easily become a source of spiritual weakness when they become the center of our world.
What should you do? Work hard and enjoy the fruit of your labors. Appreciate those things you are able to acquire. But be fully content with having your needs for food, shelter and clothing met. Never allow your inability to acquire something absorb your life. Never look at what others have and allow yourself to covet their possessions. Be at peace with what you have. This attitude insulates you from the disappointments that plague so many.
Read 1 Tim. 6:6-8 again! Being satisfied with what you have provides the type of peace we all strive for. Look at the many ways Yahweh has blessed you and appreciate those blessings. Remember, the greatest blessing is yet to come for all who make every effort to attain holiness with contentment.
