While Jeremiah had been confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of Yahweh came to him: “Go and tell Ebed-Melech the Cushite, ‘This is what Yahweh Almighty, the Elohim of Israel, says: I am about to fulfill my words against this city through disaster, not prosperity. At that time they will be fulfilled before your eyes. But I will rescue you on that day, declares Yahweh; you will not be handed over to those you fear. I will save you; you will not fall by the sword but will escape with your life, because you trust in me, declares Yahweh.’ ” Jeremiah 39:15-18
What we have here is the word of Yahweh to Ebed-melech, whose name means servant of the king. He was a eunuch that served in the king’s palace. He also was the one who, when he learned that Jeremiah was in the miry dungeon, talked to the king to save him by pulling him up from there. He had a soft heart for Jeremiah and thereby trusted in Yahweh.
This pronouncement brings judgment on the city but notice that Ebed-melech is spared due to his trust in Yahweh.
We have a lesson to learn here in that while destruction is falling all around, like Noah in the ark, we can receive protection from Yahweh when the great tribulation comes on the Earth. We need to put our faith, our trust in Yahweh, the one who is pouring out the punishment on a wicked world, to be saved.
